I am standing at the edge of Lake Tahoe with a Washoe elder who hasn't seen the Lake since he was a child. After looking long and deep into the water he stated, "The water has lost it's sparkle - I guess no one sings to it anymore? Wait...what? sing to the Lake?
Then I remembered how the original people of this land see life as interconnected relations. I want to help the lake, so I went on a walk to listen and understand, the "landuage' the language of this land. These songs are the insights gathered in my basket that help me harmonize with the earth's frequencies - where wellness begins. Sharing these songs at summer camps and community gatherings brought to my attention how few songs celebrate our relationship with nature. When I learned 37% of the world’s tree species are facing extinction, I wondered... what if our lack of conscious connection to the source of our life support (that includes trees) could be contributing to this loss? When was the last time I thanked a tree for oxygen, shade and beauty? What might shift if we listened to the songs in the earth and started to sing along - adding in the insights we gain that remind us to walk softly, respect wildlife, and share our gratitude?
